Before I get into talking about the movies themselves let’s talk about view order. There are five insidious movies. Movies three and four(Insidious: Chapter Three and Insidious: The Last Key) are prequals to the first movie (Insidious), then Five (Insidious: The Red Door) picks up there Chapter three left off. The main characters from movies one, two, and five aren’t even in three and four. Because of this, if you haven’t seen any of the insidious movies, my recommended watching order would be:
Insidious: Chapter Three
Insidious: The Last Key
Insidious
Insidious Chapter Two
Insidious: The Red Door
Insidious is a horror/suspense thriller series based on the concept of astral projection. The idea is people that can astral project can travel to a place called “the further” where the tormented souls of awful people reside. These souls crave life and will try to possess the bodies of the “travelers” while their meat suits are left vacant.
It does a good job with the suspense and you can expect a fair amount of jump scares. I really enjoyed the way they did the jump scares. You’ll be watching and can tell there's a jump scare coming just from the way the scene is set up… and then it doesn’t happen, or it happens after you think they were just doing it to make you think there was a scare coming, or after a while you start to epect them later and they do one right away. You won’t be able to tell when the scare is coming, even if you’re expecting it. This doubles as a way to really build the suspense in these scenes. I found myself thinking, just do the jump scare already and get it over with…
I definitely think some of the movies were better than others but since this is a review of the series as a whole I would give it a solid four stars. It’s not the best horror I’ve ever seen, but it has an interesting premise, it’s well executed, has solid acting, and it will keep you on your toes. It was definitely worth watching but isn’t one of those movies/series that I’m dying to see again.
