In 2054 everyone is trying to get off earth. When Mickey gets in over his head with a loan shark he has to find a way off the planet. His only option is to apply to join a colony ship as an “expendable.”
An expendable is a person who has their body copied and memories stored on a hard drive. When they die a new body is printed and their memories are uploaded into the body. They exist to die. An expendable gets the dangerous jobs with a zero chance of survival as well as scientific experiments.
The colony is on the way to an ice planet called Niflheim. If you aren’t aware Niflheim is from Norse mythology. It’s a world of mist and ice ruled by the god Hel. The trip to Niflheim takes a little over four years. During that time Mickey dies sixteen times. On his seventeenth life the colony thinks he’s dead. They print out Mickey 18 and Mickey 17 returns. This is a big problem because if two copies of the same person exist at the same time protocol is to kill them both, delete their memory backup, and print files.
I’m not going to spoil what happens in the movie. If you’re looking for an original Sci-fi flick with an interesting premise, lots of wacky characters, and dark humor, give Mickey 17 a watch.
